"Multiple reports have indicated that cost is a key barrier for students entering or continuing higher education and cannot afford to pay tuition fees out-of-pocket. Committee Members and invited guest speakers will discuss whether cost is a barrier to entering the health professions in a February 28 Pre-workshop, the first session in the public workshop series, Affordability of Health Professional Education (HPE).  A second pre-workshop on March 25, will explore existing payment models for HPE. The main workshop, scheduled on April 23-24, will consider the global evidence shared in pre-workshops to understand the value of HPE, and determine whether a shift in the value proposition may be desired to ensure sustainability of the health professions workforce.

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a public workshop to explore educational and financial models of health professional education programs and their relationship to affordability. Such models will draw from examples in the US and around the globe, and may include:

-Competency-based education;
-HPE doctoral-level education requirements;
-E-learning options;
-Pathway programs into the health professions;
-Tuition-free education; and
-Public service and loan repayment programs.

The planning committee will select and invite speakers and moderate the discussions at the workshop. Following the workshop, a proceedings in brief of the presentations and discussions will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
